Pest Fest by Julia Durango; illustrated by Kurt Cyrus (Simon &
Schuster, 2007). ISBN: 978-0-689-85569-6

For storytime fun, insect-unit extension, or art lessons on
perspective, you're going to love Pest Fest! Raucous rhyming text
tells the story of an insect competition: "Pest Fest! Pest Fest!"/
the Carpet Beetle barked./ "The talent show is set to go./ The bets
are placed: come on, make haste!/ Let's start the annual Pest Fest!"
Forget the most beautiful (Butterfly), the most musical (Ladybug),
the most uniquely outfitted (Firefly), this show is about talent in
pesting, perturbing, and disturbing the Carpet Beetle MC reminds the
host of insects who come to strut their stuff at the fest. Although
the little Housefly despairs, it is her talent to distress and
torment that wins the aggravation contest: . . . a knack for being
pesky,/ you're a breeder of pollution,/ you're the ace of
aggravation, / you're the Prince of Persecution!" Kids will clamor
to hear this book again and again, shouting Pest Fest! Pest Fest!
more loudly each time, but there's added fun in store when they
realize that the enormously detailed close-up illustrations actually
all take place on the backdrop of a young fisherman and his
dog. They'll eagerly return to each page to determine exactly where
each insect is resting. High on the "Eeewww" factor, Pest Fest will
satisfy many a reader. [Suggested Grades: K-3]
