Our library has eliminated its bio section altogether and fully catalogs
biographies with the subject area that the biography is related with, i.e. George
Washington is with books on the American Revolution, Abraham Lincoln is in 973.7,
Harriet Tubman is in 973.7331, Jane Goodall is in 599, Shakespeare biographies go
alongside his works in 822.3, and you get the idea.

This was a curriculum-driven evolution of an idea. Teachers came in and said they
wanted kids to do projects on people of a certain time period. It was easier for us
and the students to find biographies on people by going to the shelves on the
American Revolution than to search here and there through the biography shelves. It
also gave kids an excellent visual idea of how people were related to their time
period. We felt it made educational sense to keep it this way as opposed to having
a separate biography section.

Subject: Re: BIO Spine labels --- really?

Actually, 921 is not the proper Dewey for individual
biographies, it is just one way we have made Dewey
work for us. And what is under the classification
number is local choice, as Dewey does not specify
this. Cutter #, the first (however many you want)
letters of the authors last name, or the biographees
last name, are all local choice. If we had "Dewey
police" we would all be in trouble.
