Jody's post about ASL right after Roberts and Shonda's posts about troubled children reminds me of a situation that worked out nicely for me the very first year I was in the library. A couple of 8th grade girsl were just not "into" school at all, but managed to get through it. I had been taking ASL classes just for fun and was telling them about it one day. They showed considerable interest. I had learned to sign America The Beautiful, which, as it happened, was what we werew scheduled tp sing at graduation. I offered to teach it to them and cleared with the principal the idea that they might "perform" it at graduation while we sang. Everyone was happy, they felt valued and appreciated, and they actually focused better the rest of that year, looking forward to their special part in the ceremony. Maureen S.
