Good morning, Most people, in response to my Target about which professional journal they prefer (Library Media Connections or School Library Journal), said they subscribe to both because each offers something unique. Below are the individual responses. Thanks to all who answered me! Ilana Locker Librarian Colegio Internacional de Caracas Caracas, Venezuela lockeri@ciccaracas.com.ve http://www.ciccaracas.com.ve/elementarylibrary/ ******************** I much prefer LMC to SLJ. As a High School Librarian, I feel that SLJ shies away from reviewing edgier YA fiction for more mature readers. I feel, sometimes, their reviews are too "rosy." Additionally, much of their content is geared to elem/middle levels. LMC has monthly reproducibles for your faculty, Big6 research process tie-ins, and great reviews of HS level books. That being said, I subscribe to both. **************** I like both magazines, School Library journal has better reviews and LMC has better articles. ************* I prefer LMC's articles and SLJ's review section, so I get both. I know they are expensive, but the professional development is worth it! ************* Personally, I think it is worth both because of the articles. I also appreciate the reviews as I used to review for LMC and their reviewers are all working school library media specialists but their reviews are often not published as quickly as SLJ. ************ I actually get both. They seem to do different things for me. LMC really has nice curriculum connection info and SLJ makes me feel a little more connected to the public library/publishing community even though it is School library Journal. I also think School library journal reviews the really new stuff in a timely manner and their starred reviews seem to be winners. *********** I use both. Each has different articles. Also, I like to have at least two reviews to compare for book purchase. ********** I've cut way back on my periodical subcriptions, but do continue to get SLJ even though it's expensive, because I feel the cost is justified by the extensive and comprehensive book review ********** Yes, it is worth maintaining a subscription to both. Library Media Connection has great features on technology and the practical application in your library setting. LMC also has great reviews of books, AV hardware and software and web sites that include a rating system. Their ratings include Highly Recommended, Recommended, and Optional Purchase. They let you know right away if the item would be considered an optional purchase. School Library Journal has great reviews and in the past focused mainly on books. They have added features recently for reviewing AV hardware and software along with web sites. They do not include an actual rating system. My selection policy requires two reviews from reputable sources.Thesequalify. *********** I really like LMC. However, one year I dropped SLJ and found out that I wasn't getting the up-to-date news in library land. Now I get them both again. Do you get Library Sparks? It has great activities! ********** I love Library Media Connection lots of information just for us and the review are by school librarians ( it's cheaper too) Had SLJ when I first got here and found that of the pages of reviews typically only 4-5 or less where aimed at my patrons- maybe that has changed since then- and most reviews were by public libraians who as has been noted have a different mission/ focus than schools do. JHMO *********** And another person suggested: What about these magazines- I only have LIBRARY SPARKS and SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA ACTIVITIES MONTHLY -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
