I'm not sure I would agree. I kind of like the idea that a NYT sportswriter thought to mention the school library (did I just stereotype the sports writing profession?!). At least he didn't say 'dead as a school library!' Chuck Finnigan Teacher/Librarian Central School Sedro Woolley, WA cfinnigan@swsd.k12.wa.us -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of David Bilmes Sent: Sunday, March 04, 2007 1:24 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: [LM_NET] General: Another day, another stereotype Not content with having dragged LM_NET into the controversy over the Higher Power of Lucky with a front-page article a few weeks ago, the New York Times is now negatively portraying school librarians in today's sports section. The following is an excerpt from an article about the New York Rangers hockey game: "For long stretches, Madison Square Garden fell as quiet as a school library before Valiquette and the Rangers showed the kind of spunk that they had rarely shown this season." The Times does have a Public Editor, Byron Calame, who writes a twice-monthly column reflecting readers' concerns. Perhaps its time for LM_NET to bombard him with emails educating him about our profession (see below). His email is public@nytimes.com. If you want to contact him about the hockey article mentioned above, it's in the March 4, 2007, sports section, and the headline is: Lundqvist Gets Rest, and Backup Saves Rangers. The following is from: http://www.nytimes.com/top/opinion/thepubliceditor/index.html A Word From the Public Editor Everything readers send to our mailbox will be read by me or my associate, Joseph Plambeck.
