I just finished up a Children's Lit class here at the U of MT and our
professor read us Sahara Special which we decided would be appropriate for
5th-6th grade. The protagonist is in 5th grade but it does have a little
bit of language that I think you could edit out - it's by Esmeì Raji Codell
and I thought it was great. Another good one might be Sachar's "Holes" if
most of them haven't read that yet.

Subject: TAR: Short 5th grade read-alouds

Hi Everyone

Can anyone recommend some short read-alouds that would be appropriate for
5th grade? Short novels, short stories, anything you can think of.
I just finsihed a long and intense research unit and Battle of the Books
with my 5th grade classes and they have worked for months really hard. I
want to reward them with some read-aloud time for the last month of school.
They could use the break as we wind down the school year.

Any ideas welcome! Thanks :)
