A bit 'o news:

Whew! Just finished the fourth day of my 23rd Annual Winners Conference here
in scenic New Jersey on Friday and it was a blast--well, it was for me,
anyway. My huge thanks to the 500+ folks who attended. We romped through 100 of the
best books of 2006. I've finally caught up on sleep, and now I'm digging
through the basement to start tackling all the new 2007 books that have been
marinating down there, waiting for me.

Just wanted to let folks know that if you didn't get to come to Winners but
would like to get the brand new 200+ page Winners Handbook, it's available from
www.LU.com, or Follett or B&T, or Amazon, etc. The handbook covers my list of
favorite 100 books from 2006, with thorough annotations, germs (ideas &
activities), and a list of related titles for each book; lots of supporting
materials, teacher's guides and worksheets (oh, I forgot--we call them "graphic
organizers" nowadays . . .), subject, author, and title indexes; an updated Surfing
the Net chapter of great websites; and then some. Basically, this is the
first update to Books Kids Will Sit Still For 3, and is similar to my BER Handbook
(which you can't get unless you go to a BER seminar), so it's very nice that
LU makes it available to buy.

Now I'm starting to work on my new storytelling workshop, "Once Upon a Time,"
that I'm presenting at The Pines in Edison, NJ for Libraries Unlimited on
Oct. 5. I'm working on the handbook for it, which will, LU tells me, will be
available from them as well in the Fall. Information will be on LU's website
pretty soon, if you're interested.

If you're looking for a batch of good hands-on book ideas to finish up the
year with your kids, take a look at my new article, "Desperate Librarians: or,
When You Need a Few New Ideas" on the NoveList site. To get to it, if your
school doesn't subscribe, you can go through your public library's website. Look
for Databases. You'll probably need to enter your patron ID, and then you'll
see the link to the article on the NoveList home page. If you've never explored
NoveList before, it's a pretty remarkable service. You can find full text
reviews of any fiction book, plus links to websites, booktalks, and lots of ways
to link books together. I've done 3 columns for them so far this year,
including: Fantasy Versus Realistic Fiction: Teaching Genres to Middle Grade
Readers
and Book Performance Art: Using Reader's Theater and Creative Drama with Young
Readers.

Finally, I'm on the Sibert Committee this year, which is for informational
books. If you read any fabulous nonfiction for kids this year (only 2007 books
are eligible), please e-mail me and let me know.
