I forwarded this question to a coworker, our music cataloger, and she did
some great research on some Music lists she subscribes too.

I hope this information helps -

"Well, I'm not particularly well-versed in legalise, and copyright confuses
the heck out of me. However, this sounds perfectly reasonable to me, but
whether or not it was acceptable probably really depends on the terms of the
license. Here's a link that may help in deciphering said license
http://www.arl.org/sc/licensing/glossary.shtml.

I sent the question to the Music Library list, and have only received one
response so far, but basically what they said was that it could be argued
either way - the media owners' lawyer would say that unless it specifically
says so in the license, change of format isn't allowed because presumably
using the item would eventually cause it to wear out and thus require
purchase of a new copy. Making one's own copy would therefore presumably
deprive the owners of revenue (yikes! That almost sounds legalise-like).

On the other hand, you could probably argue fair-use (see this link for
MLA's (Music Library Association) take on that and their other copyright
guidelines:
http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/mla/Guidelines/Accepted%20Guidelines/Copyright%20
and%20Fair%20Use.aspx)

Here's the U.S. code on making copies of software:
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000117----000-
.html

I'm not sure that the situation in question fits those specifics, but I'm
not sure that the CD's in question really count as a "computer program"
either.

Probably their best course of action would be to have legal counsel look
over the license agreement with them."

Subject: TAR: Music recs for elementary end-of-year
slideshows/graduations/friends/school themed slideshow

I'm in search of appropriate music for use in an iPhoto/iMovie or Powerpoint
slideshow for the end-of the year assembly, celebrating the many ways our
students have grown and learned. In the past, we've cobbled together public
domain music with short 20-30 second popular musical montages. The
slideshow has grown to be 15 minutes + long, and this year I'd like to use
longer pieces from the songs so the lyrics can be heard... and avoid having
the process of major audio editing. I'll need make arrangements for the
use of the music. If I'm paying to use it, I'd like the music to sound
great, be moving, and be appropriate for the event.

Of course, we'll approach Disney for High School Musical's "Were All In This
Together" (great message, clean lyrics)... but what else do you suggest?
The music doesn't have to be new, parents will make up half the audience,
and they'll want to recognize some of the songs too.

I'll post a hit of responses, if there is interest. Thanks in advance!
