Several of you have already said it better than I could. I would just add
this thought.

If they do away with Dewey or LC, won't they still need some "system" to
mark the book so that it gets put back in the correct "section".

Maybe they feel the shelvers can just look at the cover, decide what the
subject is and then find the correct section. Sounds like a real mess to me.

Maybe they plan to put some kind of marker on the spine indicating what
section the book goes in. Sounds like a classification system to me.

Once the book gets into the "section" where in the section does it go? If
you have a whole shelf unit full of baseball books, does the reshelved book
go in the middle, at the end or anywhere there is a hole? Or will there be
some kind of marker to keep them in order (see point above)

Imagine patron wanting the same title that someone else had, or that they
had read before. Where in the "section" would they find that book?

As far as tagging, I am all for it. Give me a program where I can do my
classification but allow individual users to create their own tags for
books. HMMMM I think that librarything.com fits the bill. Maybe something
along this line in the public library catalog, users create an account and
tag.

The main thing I get from this discussion is the idea that I need to look
closer at my signage and add more signs outlining sections.

And as a last thought, I have done some of revamping. I created two fiction
areas, Fantasy/Science Fiction and the rest of the Fiction. I put the Story
Collections in Fiction or in some cases in the 800s. But I am keeping with
Dewey.
