Very interesting article. thanks to Patricia for sharing. My favorite quote was from Diane Hulse, the school's head. "We would no more cut the funds to our library than we would cut funds to our history program. Our core is our academic program and this [library] is central to it." The school that she heads is a private school. Many public schools in all parts of the country are struggling with budget issues. Consequently school library service is often given low priority. I'm sure that many districts (especially ones where a librarian is shared by more than one school) will not be interested in spending the money to keep school libraries open later when the town already support a public library. Regarding the title of the thread: I wonder how many banks are still open only from 9 to 3? I know of some that pride themselves on being open 7 days a week and for most public holidays as well.
