From the 1996 Accelerated Reader Installation and Users Manual,
Copyright Advantage Learning Systems, Inc.

1. Select 3 representative pages that are full of text, without
illustrations, photos, or other major graphic elements.
2. Count the number of words on these pages and divide by three.
3. Calculate the proportion of non-textual material in the book. To
do this, go through a 50-page sample of the book. For each page,
estimate how many thirds of the page are non-textual. Add up the
number of thirds for the entire 50-page sample, convert the fraction
to a decimal and divide by 50. This is the proportion of non-textual
material in the book.
4. Count the total number of pages in the book, eliminating pages
taken up by the table of contents, preface, index, etc.
5. Calculate the estimated number of words in the book with this
formula: Average words per full page of text multiplied by (one,
minus the proportion of non-textual material)multiplied by the number
of pages.

There is a bit more as well. If you would like me to fax it to you,
let me know.
