I am once again disgusted and horrified by what I am reading--defacing of an
author's work; there is simply no excuse. It is sadly apparent that too many
Librarian Teachers have given into their own uptight background/fears
(veeerrrryyyyy American) that rarely exist with most parents. When I was a
Classroom Teacher, I chose to face off publicly (not at all my style) against a
highly angry and powerful Board of Education that wanted to take my job (politics
only--not due to my teaching abilities), BUT I saw an injustice and stood my ground
calmly and gracefully--as did hundereds of parents that stood by my side; I was
quickly reinstated by a very sheepish BOE. As Teacher Librarians, we have policy,
research and educated journal articles, not to mention gurus in the field, to back
up our decision to provide a wide variety of materials to our students--that is our
JOB by definition--and it is high time we stop hiding and stand up for what we
SHOULD believe in. Otherwise, in my opinion, get out of the profession.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO excuse for defacing another's work of art, be it a book,
painting, sculpture, etc. There comes a time when one must stand up for one's
profession and what one believes in--perhaps these Teacher Librarians who fear
parents so greatly ought to look at their own personal hang-ups.Jenifer
