Thanks to all who responded - it was a great help!

Hit: Hi/Lo

No question - Orca Sounding has a series that is just what you want. It
works with mine!

You simply have to call Mackin and get their help. They are experts,
answer the phone and really are nice folks, Master degreed librarians,
too.

www.mackin.com or 1-800-245-9540.

I count on them to help me and other librarians with whom I network.
They haven't failed me yet.

Bluford High Series, Orca Publishing, Graphic novels, Platinum Teen
series

A great start would be graphic novels. They are easy to read and the
pictures help with comprehension. Plus the students love them!

You'd be surprised at the reading levels of a lot of books that are at a
junior high interest level. The Outsiders, for instance, is written on a
4th grade level. Walter Dean Myers is a great author that our kids love
as well, and I've recommended him to lower level kids. For the
girls...Jacquelyn Woodson and Angela Johnson are appealing. I'm not sure
what level Sharon Flake and Draper write on, but the kids like their
books too. They LOVE R.L. Stine's Fear Street Series, and there are the
Cirque Du Freak (Darryl Shan) novels as well. You might want to check
the lexile levels or check on www.titlewave.com, but the lower level
readers tend to like these books/authors.

Capstone Press has a nice series on motor sports and extreme sports.
Rosen also does extreme sports and another series called "Explore the
Outdoors". The Gale Group has a series by Judish Presnall on the theme
of "Animals With Jobs" that is very good.

We have had great success with the ORCA soundings books. They are short,
but are on YA subjects and look like YA books. I continue to add titles
because they are popular, and not just with my reluctant and below grade
level readers.

As far as fiction goes, Orca Publishing has several groups of books that
are written at around 3rd grade reading level but feature HS characters
and situations. I have read a few of them and they are high interest
without seeming like they are for little kids. They run around 100
pages and have been popular here.

Take a look at the book lists at:

http://www.quizlistinteractive.com/AcceleratedReader_BookLists.aspx

There are a number of lists that might be of interest to you. In
particular the list ST: High-Interest/Lo Read by Jo Lewis. Since you
can sort by level and interest it is very useful. Also clicking on the
titles will give you access to the publishing information. These are
all books with Accelerated Reader quizzes, but the list is not provided
by Renaissance Learning. There are over 700 in the list below.

Once you are in the booklist for High Interest, etc. you can select
"Advanced Search" and use the "Search" button to enter your own criteria
such fiction/nonfiction, keywords and levels, etc. You'll notice that
there are links where you can create print lists in the left green
border as well. Take time to explore. I find it very useful as a
library tool.
