I was at a high school for 26 years as a solo librarian. Retired from there 2005. I can't remember how long ago I interfiled most of the Reference Books there but it was before our last Middle States Accreditation... probably at least 10 years ago. I loved it... increased the Print Reference usage tremendously. The Middle States Team loved it. The concern they had was, was it all available for check out? ...the only reason I wouldn't let something go out, was if there was an assignment in progress where the item was needed for a class or classes... which the Team completely agreed with. Fast forward to about 5 years ago. New Library Supervisor... she absolutely disagreed with the premise of interfiling. Unfortunately the Middle States Team had not made their approval a part of the documentation. She made it very clear to me that my sharing their delight and approval was an inadequate defense. My recommendation is to clear it with your Supervisor, getting the official approval in writing...at the very least, in an email that you permanently save. Additionally, of course, now there is this LM-NET discussion. Good solid justification. But still get your present Supervisor's approval in writing/email. Document. Happy inter-filing. In a high school with a large collection (mine is 25,000 books) I would still want a pretty good sized reference collection just for quick use. Many of the reference type books would get lost in my regular shelves. I have already moved a lot to regular shelves and we always check out reference books overnight and ask if students need them for a longer time period.
