Dear Wise and Wonderful Ones: In college(many years ago), I heard a dramatic interpretation of a short story that has stuck with me forever. Except of course for the title. The story was narrated by a young woman who had a baby and was terribly poor She describes how she manages to eat and wash clothes. Because the water is so hard on her hands they are terribly chapped. The baby has diaper rash. The mother saves 12 cents a penny at a time and walks several miles, baby on hip, to buy Vaseline. When she gets to the store, the Vaseline has gone up 2 cents. She walks home without it. If anyone recognizes this story and knows the title please e-mail me directly.
