LM_NET Archive

Lisa & LM_NET... this reminds me of many years ago before I retired from the public
school system I worked for for 29 years.

I got an email from one of the IT persons for accessing an inappropriate and
uneducational site.

(......they monitored our emails, which we all knew...so I was very careful what
I emailed) I had emailed all the other librarians in the system about the site
that a student had just shown me, just saying if they needed a smile and had a
second, this site would produce a smile.

I really caught "what-for" about this.

The BEST and funniest thing was that about 3 years later, the business teacher
was showing me something in her textbook... I noticed on the opposite page in the
textbook that they had a whole page devoted to this site, listing it as an example
of fun things that could be found on the Internet that you could safely show your
students.

What was this inappropriate site according to the IT person...? I just checked,
it's still available and has morphed into a real business... you have probably
heard of it. It's the Dancing Hampters' site:

So yes, IT people are like this many places ... given authority to access what
you have been trained professionally to evaluate, whereas most the times they have
not been.

  Just one example.

It is widely used by our excellent multi-county public library system. This year
I wanted to "splurge" and buy one for my school use. However, it had to pass muster
from our IT department first!!!!!! The request was sent to IT where it languished
for almost a month. I didn't realize it required "software" approval until I
checked why the requisition request was taking so long. "Oh, I'm sorry but IT has
to approve it first. They are very busy over there, do you want me to check on its
progress so far?" I steamed, CANCELLED the order and stomped out of the office. I
know it's not a professional reaction, but I'm tired of non-teachers directed so
much of my business!!! I know that the product is good and provides many
opportunities to connect books and readers.

It comes with Photoshop software that enables you to create layers for background,
text, and your own pictures. And it seems wonderful, but mine did not come with
instructions and is a bit more complicated than I imagined!! If you have used this
software and can find the time, please send easy to follow instructions to get me
started. Thanks.
