SNabinger@MCS.CNYRIC.ORGSubject: Middle Eastern fiction/poetryGreetings! I'm hoping
you can help me generate a list of titles and authors. Myseventh and eighth grade
ELA teachers want to teach a literature unit thathelps students better understand
the culture of the Middle East in general.Granted that there are dozens of distinct
cultures in the Middle East, butthey feel that they won't be able to find enough
works if they concentrateon just one country. I'm looking for a list of titles or
authors who write from a Middle Easternperspective. I don't want books written by
westerners that are set in theMiddle East. Hopefully we can give the kids a list
of works that they canread to fulfill the requirements of the project. Don't worry
if the titleyou have in mind isn't appropriate for middle schoolers - we can still
useit. We're going to excerpt those aimed at a more mature audience and usethem
for ELA-style quizzes. I've got some of the poetry of Naomi Shihab Nye, but can
anybody give me ahand with other authors/titles? Thank you! Steven Nabinger,

districtLong before I was in the district, 14 years now, the community was fedup
with all the fund raiser type things coming home with the kids tosell magazines,
gift wrap, cookie dough and everything in-between. Thecommunity said, look we are
paying for this anyway, how much does eachclub make on an average from these
events? They then added thoseamounts to the levy and each club gets their money
without the hassle. Now, it isn't just a few in the community paying for all those
things, everybody has an equal share. Not much in the way of coveringinflation, but
the cost of the things would have gone up too, so itprobably all comes out about
the same. Pictures at the secondary level are during the
studentorientation/registration times before school starts. The elementarykids do
have to take time out of their day to get their pictures taken. What with the
movement to have all students with picture ID it has to bedone. It is always the
option of the parents to buy pictures or not. But, we need the pictures for ID
purposes in a variety of places;library being one of, it is important to get the
pictures taken duringschool times instead of relying on parents to remember to send
a currentpicture of their child to school. Only grades k-7 hold book fairs. They
are during conference week; thestudents have very little "library time" to view the
items. Then thefair is open during the afternoons and one evening for the students
tocome in with their parents, or NOT as the parents choose. Jean R. Jean

RANT:Anti-Scholastic movement in my district Although I doubt the monopoly issue
would demand us to stop usingscholastic, I agree with the parent. I also
agree it is a pure waste of instructional time and would preferit be treated as an
elective afterschool event. The only reason we are forced to use book fairs
or any fundraisingmechanism is because we as parents, teachers and a community
refuse tofund schools properly. A wide range of corporations (scholasticincluded)
benefit enormously from this fact. I am disgusted with our children being
used for corporate gain. I amrequired to hold scholastic fairs but I am
continually disgusted withthe junk they sell and the profit they make off of my
lower middleincome students. From: "Ron Wagner" To: Sent: Wednesday, January 09,

pam.gelbmann@COMCAST.NETSubject: Re: RANT:Anti-Scholastic movement in my
districtWow! When I think of the number of years that book fair has been a major
source (sometimes only source) for library funds, that is scary. While I run book
fair in conjunction with parent teacher conferences, it would still cut into the
sales to not be able to sell during the school day. Plus do you pull everything
down during the school day or try to teach with all the displays up? Yah, that will
work. It seems to me that one person's complaint was not thought through with the
effects on the big picture. Perhaps that one person would like to donate the lost
funds to the library? Is the problem the monopoly? Get the complainer to organize
another way to get books to kids at a reasonable cost. While your district is
small, one person's complaint shouldn't scuttle the whole deal, IMHO.--Pam
