Friends, I wanted to make sure and thank you all for taking part in this delightful Friday discussion. Frankly, realizing that my inquiry was a little...um...provocative, I expected to find at least a couple vitriolic flames in my inbox. Instead you were all so thoughtful and nice. Shucks. As I had time to tell some of you, I was glad, sort-of, to hear from most female respondents that they get asked to do the same sort of stuff; most people feel it's the nature of the job, not an accident of gender. I at least feel less singled out, and somewhat less of a push-over than it was pointed out--rightly so--that I largely am. The sad part is that many of you told me you also feel that fellow teachers often freely call upon us to do the menial but shun us when it the opportunity arises to get collegial. Somehow, we just have to figure out how to change that. One of your responses, one that dealt with the really boneheaded stuff we're sometimes asked to do, reminded me of something that happened to me years ago. I apologize in advance if I've told it before. Back then, people would send me stuff from around the school district to fix. I supplied repair tags for this purpose but this particular item came to me with just a note, crayon on construction paper, taped to it. It was a cassette player and the note said "Cassette player has a sore throat." There was a large sad face illustration included just to make sure I got the point. I opened the cassette door to begin investigating the problem. It was stuffed, completely, with bright red Play-Doh. Have a great weekend, y'all.
