Just following up on Jo's post about the teddy bear exchange. ... those students
(who are in their
senior high school years now) STILL remember that and whenever I see them we recall
the adventures
of Spangles. We took him on holiday with us through Victoria and recorded the
event - my daughter
(then 16) also remembers it very well as he got us in behind-the-scenes to many
places. Not only
that, so many people asked us why we were taking photos of a teddy that looked like
the American
flag that we became a one-family advocacy band for teacher librarians and libraries
all summer!

Teddies have universal appeal and there is so much that can be learned from an
exchange, so if Flat
Stanley gets canned there is an alternative.

My students also got involved in many of the projects that Jo mentioned including
the GSN winner
Friends and Flags from Karen Eini in Israel (sadly, after 10 years it is now
finished) , all long
before the evolution of Web 2.0 . But we had email and webpages and it was a
fabulous way to open
the world to the kids, an evolution of the snail mail penpals of previous times.
I*earn.org
http://www.iearn.org.au/ is a good place to start but even if you have an idea use
your professional
networks like this one to seek contacts. I await the back-to-school postcard and
greetings requests
that will start as you head back to school. Something as simple as a greeting from
Canberra (where
I lived) meant many learned that the national capital of Australia was not Sydney!
Many may well
have been surprised to find that the architect of our city was also the architect
of Washington DC,
and then, there is always the story of his wife Marion, the brains behind it all
when women were not
allowed to have a brain.

I am always happy to pass on requests to your Australian colleagues for
partnerships, but we have
just started the second half of our academic year, finishing in early December, so
if you want to
start something it would need to be done soon as Term 4 (October - December) is
always too frantic.
