My very fist library job in 1994 was in a very small school, but the library had a typewriter with a memory! We had no computers, but I only ever had to type one catalog card, and then tell it how many to do and it typed them while I was doing something else. The kids were fascinated that it worked by itself. I only had to add the top line depending on which drawer the card was going in. In my next school we had records--kids were transfixed to think it had music (or in most cases poetry readings) on BOTH SIDES! BTW, we still use a typewriter for our spine labels because they stay readable better than any others, and my assistant can crank them out in record time. Every once in a while someone comes in to fill in a form and is most grateful that we still have our typewriter. And when it bit the dust 4 years ago we re-ordered the same model without skipping a beat. Maureen S.
