Is anyone else disappointed that after nearly 30 years we still have librarians who are responding to "In the Night Kitchen" by censoring the book through these types of actions: > Several said they had drawn shorts on the boy. > > One has pulled the book from the collection. I realize that there are situations where community standards are considered, but I think, as a profession, some school librarians don't understand that it is sometimes necessary for the librarian to take the stance of protecting the integrity of the author's original work while continuing to provide access to the materials without censoring it themselves. If censorship is done by the professional school librarian, then I have to ask... what hope do we have in protecting the collection when outside censors attack other materials within the collection because of the intellectual content? ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, BA Ed., MLIS Library Media / Technology Specialist Weatherford, TX 76086 Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
