I find it interesting that Newman is such a cultural icon AND this magazine has
been in publication for so many years.

How many generations have "eaten up" this humor, been disgusted at "kids these
days", and argued over the "legitimacy" of this publication?

When you have been around this long, AND so many people from such varied levels
of society know quite a bit about this magazine then it seems the magazine has a
right to continue to create a stir.

I applaud educators who have the courage to provide access to materials that make
us think! MAD does make us laugh, snort, gasp, and think. I think that is the
role of humor in our society.

Even if you decide not to defend stocking this particular magazine, it
is completely defensible to have something to draw in those kids who
think that reading is dull or lame or too hard for them.

Just want you to know, I ate up every issue of Mad magazine when I was
a kid, much younger than middle school. I especially loved the
fold-in pictures, which were pretty much always rude. It was perfect!
It was funny. It also was droll and made me think. My sister and I
would roll around in fits of hysteria when we didn't even really get
the jokes.

And I was a shy, academically excelling, polite little girl.
