Plagiarism Lesson Suggestions
You know what would be neat? If you took one student from that classaside (one that
you know well and trust) and ask them for a paper/essaythat they wrote and did well
on. When the lesson rolls around, get up infront of the class and say, I just found
this great essay online, and I'mgoing to use it in my (grad class, give it to my
son/daughter, etc), andstart reading it. Then the student (and he/she can be in on
it) can standup and say, "hey, that's mine, I wrote that" and go from there about
howeasy it is to get other people's work off the Internet, and how you haveto give
credit, and how it stinks when you've done all the work andsomeone else gets the
credit, etc. I think that would get theirattention!!

We put together an online interactive tutorial w/ a quiz at the end (they have to
pass it w/ a 100% & keep taking it until they do). You're more than welcome to use
it however the quiz won't work for you b/c the results will come to our account.
You could always recreate it in your own
account.http://lswhs.leesummit.k12.mo.us/lmclsw/Plagiarism/plaghome.htm

Show the Fair(y) Use Tale - its not about plagiarism but should help get the idea
across http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/documentary-film-program/film/a-fair-y-use-tale
Also, take a look at MyBites-http://www.mybytes.com/ a curriculum concerning
Intellectual Property Rights, you may find an attention getter there.

We created a PowerPoint lesson and accompanying quiz for all 9th graders to take
last year at our 9th grade high school. (I'm at a middle school now), but I know
they've fully implemented the powerpoint and quiz this year. It's actually a
requirement for all 9th graders before they can begin using the library. The
powerpoint and quiz can be found on this link, which is off our library home page:

There is a great set of DVD's on plagiarism, evaluating sources, etc. that our
librarians really like. Here is a link to the catalog record for the plagiarism
one. Hope it helps!
