Good Idea. I think it would be even more effective if we could get those library supportive principals and superintendents to speak for us. We could even make it easy for them by writing something up and sending it in an email with a link to Obama's site. Margo Schmidt, SLMS F. E. Bellows School Mamaroneck, NY 10543 www.mschmidt@ryeneck.k12.ny.us -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Miller, Michelle Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 10:42 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: A new voice Whether you voted for McCain or Obama, the fact is we are facing a new administration soon. There is a website Change.gov, that the Obama transition team is looking at as they begin to determine priorities for the coming year. This may be an opportunity for school librarians to share the important work we do with the incoming administration. The more folks who are willing to provide input in the school solutions, the more chance we have of changing our role. There are many people who still think of the librarian as the bun and books lady that just shushes everyone... We know we are different in the 21st Century school, and we bring many essential information literacy skills to the kids. However, in many states, elementary librarians are not mandated, this may be a small crack in the door, but as a profession, we could make strides in changing our perception with administration, teachers, parents, and districts. I guess the more folks who mention the importance of mandated librarians to teach information literacy skills, the more we can do for the kids...so take a few minutes, sell yourself, sell us, we do make a difference and let's use these new formats to be heard.
