Hi Everyone, I just finished a class that gave me a real run for my money and I wanted to take some suggestions from you. This is my third year as a LMS, but my first in this school (well, schools, I alternate weekly between two schools of over 600 students each, EEK!) 4th and 5th Graders have always been my challenge, as I am the same size as them, and look like a high schooler, and am not naturally assertive. I have one 5th grade class that is walking all over me, through our lessons all they do is goof around and talk very loudly, mostly teasing each other, and I have parent volunteers, no aide, so I am embarassed to let the parents see how little respect the students have for me. The trouble is, they are helpful kids, this is the class that offers to work during their recess and stamp cards, and help straighten things out, but in a class setting they get out of control. Of course it is several leaders in this area. One of the issues is my students are allowed to keep their books for three weeks, something the Librarian before me started. It makes life easier as I don't have to renew 20 books a class, but I have students coming in and basically thinking this is recess because they are not getting books. I also only see them every other week, and many of the classroom management tools I use, my aide doesn't go through with during her week (lets them sit anywhere, if they have already heard a story she lets them go play a game) She is really nice, and my prinipals both love her, but both of them said the previous Librarian had some issues with her because she was not "strict with the rules." Meh So I need to think of something to keep the students engaged when they are not looking for books. I have puzzles, coloring sheets, and I-SPY books available for nonbook getters, and that works fine with the younger kids, but when all but 5 students are NOT getting books, what do I do? I do not want my class to be a free for all, extra recess. Do you do anything special for the students not getting books in your classroom? I don't know what to do, I want to help the students who are actively looking for books but I can not trust the students to behave while I am in the stacks, and in general I am frustrated.
