My policy has always been anti-restrictions. I tell the parents that I am not the
reading police. It is up to them to restrict their child's reading (if they
wish)...I will not create a special section or establish a policy of restriction
for a certain student. In mt 47 years as a school librarian I have not had any
parents pursue it past that point. ( in the public and private school settings)

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] More on restricted book

I thought I had replied to the question of what the restricted shelf meant and what
I would gain if it weren't restricted anymore. I must not have sent it, or if I did
and this is a repeat, I'm sorry.

For a student to check out the book in question, they must be 18 or have their
parents fill out a form giving them permission to read the book. This was put in
place by our school board in 1993. I don't personally have anything to gain from
this other than the fact that it really bothers me that students need to get
permission to read a book.

I was also wondering if anyone had a policy that was the reverse of my restricted
list. Would it be possible to have the parents that objected to certain books fill
out a form listing the books they didn't want their children to access and leave
the shelves "open" for all the rest who didn't object? Would that cause more
problems by bringing it to parents' attention that they could restrict what their
kids read?
