I think that having individualized list of restricted materials would be a
strategic nightmare.

Luckily, I'm in a public library, but I have had parents come in and tell me that
their children should not be allowed to read certain titles (mostly fantasy, the
violence and sex seem to not get as many complaints; I have a prominently display
of GLBT teen books in my area that I have gotten nothing but praise for).

I tell them that they need to come in and supervise their kids in the library as I
am unable to follow individual kids around to monitor their reading. That is not in
my job description.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] More on restricted book

I thought I had replied to the question of what the restricted shelf meant and
what I would gain if it weren't restricted anymore. I must not have sent it,
or if I did and this is a repeat, I'm sorry.

For a student to check out the book in question, they must be 18 or have their
parents fill out a form giving them permission to read the book. This was put in
place by our school board in 1993. I don't personally have anything to gain
from this other than the fact that it really bothers me that students need to
get permission to read a book.

I was also wondering if anyone had a policy that was the reverse of my
restricted list. Would it be possible to have the parents that objected to
certain books fill out a form listing the books they didn't want their
children to access and leave the shelves "open" for all the rest who
didn't object? Would that cause more problems by bringing it to parents'
attention that they could restrict what their kids read?
