It has been my observation that postings to message boards and email can sometimes
take a nasty turn - perhaps due to their anonymous nature. Sometimes replies and
postings are intentionally combative and sometimes the interpretation of the
posting can be misunderstood. I think it is important to realize that whenever you
post something or reply, the individual reading it does not have the luxury of
viewing your body language or hearing your intonation to help interpret your
meaning. So choosing your words carefully and not responding when you are having a
bad day becomes even more important.

This point was driven home to me when I got an email from an acquaintance
expressing obviously hurt feelings at an email I had sent. At first I could not
understand why she would be hurt by it. I intended no harm. However, when I went
back to read it, I saw how it could have been misinterpreted. In my effort to plow
through dozens of emails that day I had been uncharacteristically succinct in
answering her questions and came off rather abrupt. Had we known each other better,
or in a face to face conversation, I doubt this would have been an issue.

I think too, that it is important to remember that when we post a comment to our
listserve they are there to be read by anyone forever. That thought alone has kept
me from shooting off my big mouth via internet many times.
