I used to be able to do start the first day with checkout--and feel
badly that I no longer can seem to make it work. I serve over 700 kids
at my middle school. The librarians "extra days" (the 3 days before
school and 3 after) we used to have were taken away last year. At the
same time, technology duties that MUST be completed before
check-out/STAR testing can occur were not done by the district anymore.
Basically more work for less pay, and it drives me mad for many reasons.
Sadly, the earliest most kids could check out books this year was on the
3rd day of school, and that is with me coming in early, staying late and
coming in weekends to try to prepare. My aide is pulled every 5 minutes
for everything ----making ID's, "fixing" the phones in the school,
working lunch duty, working 1 period of office duty and "teaching" a
last period PE class. It is craziness, but we are working around it the
best we can.

I have 600+ kids. Day one is under way, and I just checked out my first
class. The kids would be irate if they were told they couldn't have
access to the books. Even during my pre-duty days, I encouraged kids to
check out books when they stopped by. That's why they're here. That's
why I'm here.

PE teachers, art teachers, and other "specialists" see kids on the first
day. Why can't we?

People fail because they trade what they want the most
for what they want right now.

That's the way I do it, too. Since I'm around much of the summer,
teachers often check things out then. Students are free to start
checking things out at open house, which is a couple of days before the
first day of school. Not many take advantage of that, but I have had
some get popular books before everyone else gets them.
