[LM_NET] tech: neos won't start

We've just received a cart of 30 Alphasmart Neos and, after installing
batteries, three of them won't start.
I know the batteries are good. I've connected them via USB and to a
computer--nothing. I've even opened
a Word file on the computer and typed on the Neo keyboard, in case it's a
display problem--still nothing. 
Can anyone suggest anything else? Thanks,
