Alison,
I would recommend looking at the work and research of Stephen
Krashen, professor emeritus at the University of Southern California.
His book The Power of Reading is an excellent blueprint, philosophy and
research guide for the efficacy of reading and for methods to bring
reluctant readers into the world of words. Krashen was inducted into
the National Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame in 2005.

Walt Morey (1907-1992), author of Gentle Ben, overcame functional
illiteracy at age thirteen when he finally took up reading with a
passion. The plots for most of his 17 published books revolve around
the relationship between man and animals often using the themes of
survival, self-discovery or redemption through nature.

Subject: [LM_NET] TAR: HS Reading Specialist

Morning All -

I recently learned that one of our HS English teachers is being
reassigned as Reading Specialist for next year. We are definitely in
need of someone to help those students who are so far behind so this is
very good news! She is already a great library supporter and often asks
for my input regarding book suggestions for summer reading and reluctant
readers. She has graciously asked me to sit in on a strategy meeting
with her, the prinicpal and guidance. I'm thrilled to be included
obviously and I would like to offer her as much support as I can. With
all that being said, in what ways do you as a librarian help support a
reading intervention program within your high schools. I'm looking for
anything beyond the obvious like suggesting books, ordering books,
audiobooks. I'm open to any and all suggestions as I know she is as
well.

Thanks in advance,
