It depends entirely upon what subject she teaches. However, I would talk to her about the reason for doing the assignment. Personally, I discourage research assignments for their own sake. She should have students address real issues in her subject area, and frame their research questions around their own interests. Work with students on creating analytical-style questions that call for more than enumeration. e.g. Not "What are the causes of the Civil War" but, "Did their economic reliance on agriculture ultimately cause the South's downfall?" This type of question is argumentative/persuasive in nature and requires a student to take a stand on an issue and defend it, rather than just listing reasons. I would also encourage her to require a certain number of primary sources, which forces students to analyze and draw conclusions, rather than just spew back what they've read.
