"West with the Night," Beryl Markham; Hemingway's favorite non-fiction
book. Her account of growing up the only white child on a Kenya
plantation, then the only woman accepted into the Masai warriors'
society, then an aviation pioneer.

"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, Ph.D. Her warm, funny account of
pregnancy while in Harvard grad school studying feminist sociology.

"Autobiography of a Yogi," Paramahansa Yogananda. Classic.

However, due to your teacher's structuring of the assignment, here's an
autobiography: "My Experiments with Truth," Mahatma Gandhi, and a
biography: "Gandhi, the Man: The Story of His Transformation," Dr.
Eknath Easwaran, http://www.easwaran.org <http://www.easwaran.org/> (A
professor of English literature at U. C. Berkeley, knew how to write
well.)

Extra reading which is helpful: "Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei,"
Weinberger and Paz, is very simple, very informing about how poetry is
written.

"Going beyond the Pairs," Dennis McCort, Ph.D., is great lit crit, as
are Dr. Martin Ling's "Shakespeare in the Light of Sacred Art" and O. M.
Aivanhov's "Creation: Artistic and Spiritual."
