I would agree that this may be a case where one should consider choosing
one's battles.

 

If it were a public library situation, there would be no question that
the request is unreasonable. However in a school setting, parents have
expectations that their wishes regarding their children's choices will
be honoured. 

 

Eventually one would hope that the parent will realize that their
request is unrealistic.

 

In the meantime you might try to use this point as a jumping off point
for discussions with the parent through recommending books that you both
can agree on. Over the years I have made some very surprising allies
with people whom I met due to conflict over book choices.

I would certainly agree to not check out ANY books to her student if
that = is the parents wish. It is not your job to screen material for
individual = students, merely to follow your district selection policy.
I would attempt = to have that conversation in front of the student, as
well, so she = understands the reason she may not check out materials.
