LM_NET Archive



Another is the marketing of AR itself.  Since it attaches itself to books, most 
people obviously think that AR is a "library program."  Usually one person (the 
librarian) is the only one who manages this canned program, and can take a lot of 
professional time to process, create tests, order them, put books in a special 
order, etc..  Why is that?  Why can't teachers be the managers of their own classes 
and use AR in their own personal way?  It shouldn't be the responsibility of only 
the library, especially at the elementary school.  
And have you looked at the titles that have tests?  When the AR program starts 
creating tests for books such as the "I Spy" series of books, something's 
wrong...those books were more for the visual stimulation, not as comprehensive 
reading books.  That doesn't seem right any way you look at it...

  My pet peeve concerning AR is this.  It stifles kids on what they may really want 
to read.  It also makes kids associate reading with being awarded points or grades 
instead of just reading for enjoyment.  
   
  On the other hand, if a school has a fairly open AR list this helps immensely.  
Then kids have access to as many titles and levels they can handle.  It seems that 
many schools are locked in so to speak to a set number of titles and therefore 
tests.  If a child wants to read a book that is not contained in this set then they 
are often encouraged to read something that is (stifling).  If there is an 
exceptional child that tests and reads off the charts for that school what are 
their options?  
   
  Hope this helps some.  They are though just my opinions.
