Hi Pamela, A major argument for automating a library no matter how small is that when you do you are teaching transferrable information-seeking skills or information literacy location skills using technology. These are the same skills students should be using when searching the Web or when they go to a larger public library or move on to high school or college. These skills are now becoming essential when accessing Govt sites especially with egovernance and the push to place all information and service delivery online. In other words these are essential skills citizens need to cope in the 21st century. Using an automated catalogue means they learn their skills in an information-seeking context - ie. best practice teaching-learning pedagogy. There are automated systems available that are free or very low cost. Some we use in WA (large and small) can be found here - http://www.det.wa.edu.au/education/cmis/cat/mrr.htm :) BC Vice President, Advocacy & Promotion, IASL: www.iasl-online.org LIS@ECU: http://www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/LIS/index.php Australian School Library Research Project: http://www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/ASLRP/ Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Information Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." We have very, very small schools and it's occurred to me that I might have a very different perspective on automation than non-librarians. I think it's crucial, but then again, I'm a librarian. What do non-librarians think? So, besides time-saving, what are the best automation arguments you can think of? I'd like to focus on student impact. Of course, learning how to use an online catalog is a big library skill, any help articulating that would be much appreciated. Thank so much for your last minute help.
