Sometimes the Australian government just gets it right. As part of their economic
stimulus package,
every primary school in Australia will get a new library (if it doesn't have one)
or a multi-purpose
room. Now we are advocating that the libraries be staffed by qualified teacher
librarians but there
aren't enough to go round! The talks are continuing about developing training
packages so teachers
can add librarianship to their teaching qualification. I know one of our leading
universities has
over 200 enrolled in the initial units of the course..

Education has been one of the foundation planks of this government's policies and
for once, the
nation's teachers are feeling valued and valuable.
