This was sent to me after I posted the HIT. It has SUCH good information, I
thought the others who asked for the HIT might want to see it.

Rebecca,
Lucky me, I am a volunteer and a school librarian at the LOC. As tourist
season is cranking up I think I can give you a few tips on accessing the LOC
successfully. To read on the floor of the Jefferson building give yourself
2 days (do not let them know you are a tourist but act like a serious
researcher). We get hundreds of very aggressive tourists a day who want to
get on the floor, staffers and scholars are really using the reading rooms
to research (I have seen Kissenger several times) so I sure you can
understand why they are discouraged.

First of all, it is a non-lending library. As the public does not have
access to the stacks it takes the staff up to 48 hours to pull a title. On
the first day you need to get your LOC card (open Mon-Sat, 20 minutes in the
Madison buliding), you can then access the catalog from the Madison building
or the computer catalog center in the Jefferson building, order your titles
and have them delivered to the Jefferson reading room. Think about a
research topic that you might be interested in before you go so this is
quickly done. Also, there is a "childrens literature" reading room in the
Jefferson building, a collection not to be missed but access based on a
reaserch topic is preferred. You can search the online catalog for these
titles. It is easier for all if you are prepared to use the library with an
objective!!! There are on occassion special tours for Libraians and
workshops on archiving and conservation, check the website.

Mondays mornings are the quietest at the LOC if you are interested in a
tour. Most reading rooms are only open from Monday - Friday (with the
exception of the Jefferson, Asian and European I think). I hope I helped, I
too feel the power and sanctity every time I walk into the magnificent
instutiion the LOC is!!
