Like many of you, I have enjoyed Silverstein's books for many years. However last night I learned something new about him. I was listening to a NY radio station and after they played the song, Sylvia's Mother, they mentioned that the song was written by Shel Silverstein in reaction to a conversation he had with the Mom of an old girlfriend. Sylvia was really leaving to marry someone else and her Mom didn't want Shel to stop the wedding. I did some research and learned that Silverstein, a true renaissance man, also wrote such hits as “A Boy Named Sue” for Johnny Cash and “The Cover of the Rolling Stone” for Dr. Hook.
