Early in my teaching career I had a little girl in 2nd grade come to me to
tell me that my daughter - her classmate - had called her the "b" word. (I
taught at the school in which my daughter was enrolled). I was shocked but I
had the presence of mind to tell the little girl that it was okay for her to
tell me what the "b" word was and she could whisper it in my ear without
getting in trouble for repeating it. She cupped her hands around my ear and
said "butt!"
I promise I didn't crack a smile until she'd left my office with my
assurance that I would speak to my daughter about the hurtfulness of
name-calling. :-) susan
