The Amercian publisher bought the rights from the author to publish the book in English to the United States public. They give an advance on royalties to the author. That means that the UK publisher may not export into the United States English language editions. If you were in the UK and bought the book, or bought one to give to a friend, that is not a violation. If you solicited someone to import one for you that you then paid for , that is a loss to the United States publisher who has the rights here. I don't know why they can't publish them at the same time. I suppose it is an editing and production situation. I would love to have a 1/2 a dozen copies of Havoc right now but resisted asking the kids who were spending the break with family in England bring them to me. Apparently, it has been available in Great Britain since October 1, and many people have been ordering it from there through Amazon UK. The US publisher was interviewed about this, and said, it was illegel - a violation of copyright. He recommended we patronize our local neighborhood bookstore. My question to all of you out there who are more knowledgeable than I, is WHY is it a copyright violation? If a traveler brings one back, or a European friend sends one as a gift, is that a violation? I understand and agree with the need to support our local bookstores and publisers, so my question is really an academic one. Am I going to order one for myself? It sure is tempting. If you are not yet hooked on this series, I do recommend you read it. Will I order it for high school. No, probably not. Linda S.
