In California, they cannot replace a paid position with a volunteer California Education Code Section 35021. (b) No district may abolish any of its classified positions and utilize volunteer aides, as authorized herein, in lieu of classified employees who are laid off as a result of the abolition of a position. A district shall not refuse to employ a person in a vacant classified position and use volunteer aides in lieu of filling the classified position. Included: Eliminating all elementary para-educators (3 libraries) Eliminating part-time media specialists Elem/Middle (.7 contract) Having 1 district media specialist serving 5 district libraries. The "plan" is to man elementary libraries with parent volunteers. Para-eds have been left in place at the middle & high school to serve 1,500 kids. So, the personal part is that after 5 years in my position--and increasing student yearly circulations from 7,000 a year to 18,000 a year--I'm being rotated back to a classroom. The vote for this issue will be in June. Those of you from Michigan, feel free to write your legislators about perhaps signing off on a school budget. Harry Harry F.
