Make the most of the practical experience. Are you a teacher right now? Make good
friends with your school librarian. Help out with shelving, circ issues,
processing- she will be a great reference when you are going for a job interview.
Work part time- evenings and weekends at a local public library- budget shortages
mean they are short staffed and may be hiring part time help. Reference experience
is the most valuable. Read.... keep up with current literature. Read School Library
Journal, Read blogs. Go to regional meetings. Do well in school- those professors
are also excellent references. Be aware of curriculum issues- what are the state
standards etc... Visit as many school libraries as you can,(even if its after, your
own school day) networking with those librarians. They are the first ones to know
of any openings. If you are not working fulltime, see if you can student teach in a
library at least one day a week. (even if you are not getting credit, again good
experience, good reference) Put together a portfolio- student work, bibliographies,
web quests- document with a digital camera, newsletter writing samples, links to
websites that you have created, sample lesson plans and curriculum.

In this time of budget cuts, I am concerned about my ability to find a job
as a Library Media Specialist. I will be completing my last two semesters
of my MLS as well as my practicums this school year. My question is, what
can I do during this time to make myself as marketable as possible when I
apply for jobs in the spring?
