Book identified thanks to Becky Henderson! Here's what she wrote: This is from Conrad Richter's trilogy, The Awakening Land. The books are The Trees, The Fields, and The Town. A pretty good miniseries was made of it several years ago with Elizabeth Montgomery as Sayward (sp?) Luckett and Hal Holbrook as her husband. Gosh, I love this group. Happy Summer to all! L. I need help trying to identify a book for my mother. Bless her heart, her memory isn't the best any more, but here is what she has told me: She's pretty sure she read the book in the late '60s - early '70s, so it isn't a current title. A woman with an unusual name that is mispronounced by the townsfolk where she lives marries a newcomer. They have several children together, and one dies in a fire-related accident. Another woman moves to town -- one who is better educated and better dressed -- and she and the husband have an affair. When confronted by his wife, the husband defends himself by saying that he "hasn't left her." The wife's response is something to the effect that he "left her the first time he helped her (the other woman) with her buttons." The setting was the American past -- perhaps early 19th century? As I said, Mom's memory is a bit faulty these days, but she is sure she remembers reading and enjoying this book. I'd like to help her identify it and locate a copy, if possible. Many thanks in advance for your help. Please reply via e-mail. Kim L.
