BELOW the signature is an update/addendum to a January HIT about our 49th State / Alaska. Anyone who didn't receive my first hit and would like to receive, please reply with your email address in the body of your email template/message. This will make the reply much faster and easier for me. ORIGINAL QUESTION: I am wanting to create a unit on our 49th state of Alaska for first grade/lower elementary grades. Has anyone done the same in the past and willing to share their unit of lessons and supporting documents and student resources? I want to add to what I have in my own personal resources and ideas. In early 2009, I taught 1st graders about the Arctic/North Pole. This year I want to expand and go in another direction. First grade social studies objective is centered on how a location, climate, and physical surroundings affect the wat people live---their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Any known, active internet sites where there is a theme/unit on Alaska would be great. Literature titles to use with 1st grade on this unit ( Alaska people and the state) are also appreciated, especially fiction. Thank you very much ! Robert Joyce, M.S. (How children deal with the frigid temps in Alaska, yet still go out for recess. genre: nonfiction) use the Iditarod to teach map skills in the library media center. Maybe you could tie it in someway (location, climate, physical surroundings of the area through which the race goes?) Trackstar list of resources that some other teacher has created? Some of the older ones will have links that are out of date, but many are VERY good! http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/;jsessionid=DB9C417AA257F05298E543DFBE292080 I have a volunteer assign every class and group of people (custodians, office staff, cafeteria staff, etc.) a musher. I then send out all musher assignments ahead of time. The week before the Iditarod, as classes come to the library, I show them their musher and talk about safe websites and how they should always get their parents permission before going on the Internet. I bring in about how they can follow a current event on the Internet. We read Balto, a non-fiction book, and then several fiction books about Alaska throughout the month. I also bring the atlas into this unit. I have a great map that is to scale and shows exactly where Alaska is in relation to South Carolina. It also shows the true size of Alaska in comparison to the rest of the states. The class or group with the winning mushers win Klondike bars for everyone. I celebrate with them along with the principal and assistant principal. The class with the musher who finishes last without quitting gets the Red Latern award and some form of red treat -- strawberry bars, twisters, red pencils. You may want to check out author, Shelley Gill. Alaska's Three Bears by Shelley Gill might work although it isn't people-centered. http://www.shelleygill.com/ "Nantik the Wolf" pup is good for 1st grade, by Jean Craghead George--who also wrote "Julie of the Wolves" for 4th-6th grade. Both are good stories about Alaskan Eskimo people.
