The Beautiful Between

By Alyssa B. Sheinmel

Connelly lives in a high-rise apartment in New York with her mom. She spends
all of her time studying for the SATS. Her spare time is spent worrying
about passing her Physics class. She knows the reason she has no close
friends is because she hasnıt been honest with her classmates since she was
in elementary school. Back then it was easier to tell a lie than to be
half-honest. Half honest is all she can be, since she only knows half of the
truth.

Connelly is shocked when Jeremy Cole sits down beside her during lunch one
day. Jeremy is like the prince of high school. He has money, friends,
brains, and the coolest little sister. He is every girlıs dream of the
perfect boyfriend. Out of nowhere, Jeremy offers to tutor Connelly in
Physics if she will help him study SAT vocabulary. How could she refuse?

Soon, Jeremy is calling late at night asking to come over but he just stands
downstairs and smokes, hardly even talking. Connelly is confused. She gets
the feeling that there is more to their relationship than studying, but if
there is, why wonıt Jeremy talk to her? During one of the late night visits,
Jeremy lets it slip that he knows Connellyıs secret. She canıt even ask him
how he found out without exposing her dishonesty.

Jeremyıs world is ripped apart when his baby sisterıs illness takes a turn
for the worse. And Connelly finds herself questioning her lies, her motherıs
inability to talk about her father, and the real reason Jeremy Cole has
befriended her.

What began as a mendacious teenage relationship ends up teaching Connelly
and Jeremy the value of forgiveness, compassion, and honesty.

How could they know that true friendship could come from working through the
heartbreak of loss and the entanglement of a life built on lies?

Students will love this book! The characters are realistic. The conflicts
believable. The solutions seemingly unattainable.
