Well it is field day today for PreK-2nd graders. I have 8 little people sitting on
my floor and a whole bunch more pay for their lost books. I have to admit that I
did take less than the most books were owed, but they were older books for the most
part. I have $65.45 in my bag to turn in instead of that money going out to buy
junk food and drinks on field day! ;-)

You see, I don't believe libraries should be drab places where people sit in
silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals
as librarians. ~~Monty Python

"What I like best is a book that's at least funny once in a while.... What really
knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author
that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone
whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though."

Overdue rant and Funny stories:

This year we had a student return a book her cat had peed on. When asked
about it, she told us she knew the cat had done that. Now, why would her
parent let her do this? She probably didn't know. However why, after 3
notices from me and a letter from the Principal with details, would she
ignore the situation? I can't really say. I did find out that when you hold
up the little girl's book fair purchase ($24.00 in cash to spend as she
wished at the Book Fair) until the $30.00 in ruined and lost (her little
sister lost a library book) charges were paid, Mom finally does pays
attention. Also, the mother looked like she was going to pop when she
couldn't blast me for being so unfeeling to her child in front of a library
full of parents at the book fair. Sadly, I don't think the child learned
anything as she got her $24.00 worth of book fair stuff.

Another situation that was confusing was the parent who ignored several
notices about the book that came back dripping wet. Then, when finally
paying due to threat of a held report card, insisted almost rudely, on
having the damaged book. Of course she could have it, it may well be moldy,
I had no use for it...but I think she thought I was trying to somehow end up
with 2 copies in the library. Gotta watch those wily librarians.
