I had a little girl bring back a book securely encased in a Ziplock baggie
along with the vomit she had deposited all over it. I smiled, thanked her
for her diligence, and told her the book now belonged to her.
On the last day of post-planning I had a parent come in to pay for a book. I
said "Oh, I guess you couldn't find it?" The mom said, "We found it but I
really like that book so I just want to pay for it." She must have seen the
momentary look of surprise on my face and, as I looked up the account, said
"Unless you want it back." I explained that the amount she would be charged
would not cover replacing the book and with the huge loss of funding we're
experiencing there would be no practical way I'd ever have it in my
collection for the other students. She sighed and said, "Well, okay, we'll
bring it back tomorrow." She did. Whew.

"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend hundreds
of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff development which
*have
had limited success* in boosting test scores, but are unwilling to invest in
school library programs that show direct
correlations <http://www.lrs.org/impact.php> to student success."
