I completely agree that there is a big difference between collection development
and censorship. We all must make careful decisions about what to purchase. However,
this is a wildly popular series and most of the students at my school simply don't
have the means to get the books at a book store. And the waiting list at the public
library will be long. I don't wish to deny this series to the ones who can handle
it because of the ones who can't. If I made all my decisions that way, I wouldn't
have Catcher In the Rye, Looking for Alaska, and a host of other popular choices.
For what it's worth, these books did not come out of my library budget. They were
among many of the personal purchases I donate to my HS library. I probably would
not have used my limited library funds to purchase them as I have plenty of other
ways to use that money, but I do think they can be included in my library. I think
it also bears mentioning that it is important to know your particular patrons,
their likes and dislikes, as well as their sensibilities.
