This is my reply to Joie Taylor's questions about elementary school computer labs. I thought this information might be useful for everyone. Madeline Buchanan ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Many of the elementary school in my district are dismantling the computer labs and putting the computers in the individual classrooms. Principals say that problems in the labs include not enough computers in the lab for each child, maintenance of software, and lack of teacher training to instruct students in computer use. I feel that the only way that a librarian can successfully be in charge of a computer lab is to have the lab attached to the library where both the computer lab and library can be supervised from a key area. If the librarian is to be in charge of a computer lab, he or she must have adequate clerical staffing for circulation. There is no way that a librarian can be in charge of a computer lab which is not connected to the library. If a school district feels that computer labs are a necessary, it should consider the hiring of computer lab personnel just as necessary. --------------------------------------------------------------- MADELINE L.
